He now lives in a makeshift community of survivors along with Trina, his girlfriend who escaped New York with him Alec, an older war veteran who warned them of the Tsunami before it hit and helped them evacuate, and Lana, a war nurse who is involved with Alec and serves as the medical expert for their community. The main character of The Kill Order is Mark, a seventeen-year-old boy who survives the onslaught of the solar flares in the beginning of the novel and manages to escape to the Appalachians, where the higher ground protects them from the mass flash flooding that destroyed his hometown of New York. Although the main characters in The Kill Order do not feature in The Maze Runner, the ending of the book ties directly into the main series.
Like the primary series, it explores themes of survival, how far people are willing to go and what humans can endure, and the way that extreme circumstances bring out both the best and the worst in people. Set thirteen years before the events of the original novels, it focuses on an original cast of characters and is set in a world where Earth has been devastated by a series of powerful solar flares that have rendered the surface world hostile and near-uninhabitable. The Kill Order is a 2012 young-adult dystopian novel by James Dashner, a prequel to his popular series The Maze Runner.
